So you’ve recognized that it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Great choice! You’re investing in your family’s comfort as well as the decreasing of your energy costs and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a few more things you can do to prep your Edmonton home before you begin the air conditioning installation process.
1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load
First of all, the AC contractor should have completed what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This complex calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to determine the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it explained to you. If the contractor did what’s commonly referenced as a Block Assessment, or did not do a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend selecting another contractor or calling Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning at 587-404-0790. Your Edmonton HVAC specialist will be able to give you a full assessment.
2. Clean and Seal Ducts.
Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not recommended to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a crotchety old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your entire system and the quality of the air you breathe kicks off with your ducts giving you clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and correctly sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor do a duct cleaning prior to your new AC installation.
3. Clear a Path.
Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and make sure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other objects near the AC, clear the area as well as you can. Make sure the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even easier. Also make sure to clear away any other objects that could get in your installation pro’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are confined so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
