7 Ideas to Lower Your Heating Bill in Edmonton During the Winter

Your house is usually one of your most precious investments. It helps you financially through boosting equity, and it’s a place to watch your family grow and create moments you’ll remember, too. This time of year, you may also be experiencing increased utility bills.

As a result, finding tactics to lower your heating bill in Edmonton without lowering comfort can seem challenging.

As far as energy efficiency, houses resemble motor vehicles. Some require a lot of energy while others sip it steadily. Regardless of what type of residence you have, there are methods to block the chill this winter. The Experts are here with seven suggestions to keep your family comfortable without going over budget.

1. Change Your Air Filter

It’s the most inexpensive suggestion that exists. It’s also the best method to keep your heating system running smoothly through the winter.

The kind of filter and seasonal determinants influence how regularly you should replace it. Soaring allergen counts, pets and house size might also affect its durability. Generally, fiberglass filters should be swapped each month. Pleated styles made with better material may work for three months or longer.

“It’s really the large thing folks forget about,” said Jim Hughes, senior manager of education and training at Service Experts. “The more full the filter is, the less air is able to go through it and actually heat the house. A dirty filter makes your heating system work harder.”

2. Schedule Regular HVAC Service

It’s common to have a tech stop by your residence in the spring for AC service. That way, your air conditioner is prepped for the warm weather.

But don’t forget to schedule an appointment for furnace service before the winter too.

Among other actions, an inspection typically covers:

  • Double-checking thermostat settings
  • Cleaning and oiling internal pieces
  • Examining system shutdown and startup procedures

A tune-up helps lower the chance of dealing with an emergency repair in the middle of a blizzard. Some reports have indicated as many as 75% of “no heat” calls could have been prevented with standard maintenance.

3. Check Windows and Doors for Holes

Windows and doors are a leading entry point for frigid air. Insulating window and door frames is an cost effective method to help keep frigid air outside.

Here’s one check that Hughes advises.

Shut a door. Can you see any light? If that’s the case, it’s not totally sealed. Adjustments or weather-stripping could be needed.

If you have single-pane windows, you should consider a dual-pane improvement.

A lot of homeowners insulate single-pane windows with plastic sheeting.

It’s not a bad solution, but dual-pane windows provide much better insulation for keeping cool air where it belongs.

When you switch to double-pane windows, your energy savings could be 25% or higher.

4. Restrict Use of Vented Appliances

If you need the exhaust fan while cooking, Hughes recommends against leaving it going for a long time.

The same goes for for the dryer. Don’t let it to work after your clothes are done.

Any venting appliance or exhaust fan pulls out heated air away from your home and pulls in cold air. Operating these appliances all the time will make your heater to work harder to take care of the preventable coldness.

5. Look at Your Residence’s Edges for Holes

Inspect your residence’s exterior. This is the boundary that separates your house from the outdoors. If there’s a basement, look for blowing cobwebs or cold trickling in around the corners.

Polyurethane sealers and other solutions can be used to plug basement walls leaking air into your residence. Another inexpensive move is to add foam seals for fixture bases, like ceiling fans, overhead lights or wall outlets.

They’re fast to use and are great at stopping cold air in the winter.

6. Check Insulation Levels in Your Attic

It’s worth confirming that you have adequate insulation levels

Hughes suggests looking at the ENERGY STAR® zone map to determine the appropriate R-value for your home’s walls and attic space. This suggestion is based on the geographic area where your home is.
