Why does your homes air conditioner freeze in the summer?

Your home’s central air conditioner works hard to keep you and your family cool during the sweltering summers in Edmonton. Unfortunately, it’s fairly common for your air conditioner to become overworked, possibly restricting the airflow to your home. As toasty as it may be outside, your air conditioner can actually ice over. If this has happened to your air conditioner, don’t panic. Keep reading to find out why an air conditioner freezes and if you should schedule air conditioner service to take care of the problem.

If your air conditioner freezes up, the area to focus on is the evaporator coil within the condenser unit. There are two possible reasons the coil could freeze. First, the airflow through the coil is restricted. The system is trying to force more cold air through the coil than it can handle and therefore frost starts to accumulate on the air conditioner and slow the process even more. Eventually the frozen water can cause damage to the key parts of your AC.

If this is not the case, a frozen AC may be due to a shortage of refrigerant. Similarly, if this is the case, there simply isn’t enough “juice” to completely transport the air through the coil and things start to freeze up, giving your air conditioner a layer of ice and keeping your home from receiving the cool air it needs.

If your air conditioner has stopped running properly and has developed a layer of frost or ice, don’t worry. Follow these simple steps and your home will be feeling good again in no time.

  • Go to the thermostat and turn off your air conditioner all the way.
  • Check other areas of your air conditioner through which air flows to make sure air is not restricted. Make certain your air filters are clean and all the registers and vents are cleared off.
  • Edmonton has most experienced HVAC technicians at Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning, call now and set up your air conditioner service. Whether your air conditioner is low on refrigerant or the evaporator coil is restricted, this is a situation that should be taken care of by AC pros.

Now find a good cool spot in front of the fan and wait for your technician to come. They will be able to make an expert diagnosis of the particular problem with your air conditioner and let you know what kind of air conditioner service you will need to fix the problem.
