How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical duty as your furnace prepares to work in your space.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t operating promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will show you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
